The Stute is the weekly newspaper of Stevens Institue of Technology. The Stute is wholey run by the students and is published every Friday under the auspices of the National Society of College Journalists. My freshman year, the Editor-in-chief heard my comments about errors in an issue I was reading and asked me to stop by. I dropped in on Wednesday (back when the paper was still layed out by hand by several assistant layout editors) and was put to work editing copy. The next week I was promoted to Copy Editor, with a desk and a weekly commitment of 6-10 hours. After two years as Copy Editor, I was promoted by my peers (elected) to Managing Editor. As Managing Editor, if it needed to get done, it was my job to see that it was. It took 20+ hours per week to manage the rest of the student staff and attend to the various and sundry administrative tasks (and the occasional article). After my term drew to a close (now half way through my senior year), that twenty hours per week evaporated into the many other tasks I had de-prioritized for the paper. After many years in graduate school and seeing many new classes of students through my teaching and Residence Life work, I saw many of the same issues arise repeatedly. With many student, administrative, and communication issues repeating themselves over the years, three of my friends and I began to lament the condition of the student populace. Every Friday at our "watering hole," Court Street, we would invariably expound on the value of our experience and ideas for solutions to said problems. Since we were preaching to the choir when discussing topics amongst ourselves, I decided to start writing a column for The Stute. Please note that the columns are included here are almost nearly as published in The Stute. The current editorial board of the paper--primarily freshmen and sophomores--is still getting the kinks worked out of the system and learning to trust their more experienced contributers. 2003-12-05 . . .
